Charles Lloyd was named an NEA Jazz Master, the highest honor the United States awards to jazz musicians. A true legend whose influence reaches far beyond jazz itself, we are proud to welcome him back to Bohemia JazzFest for the first time since his unforgettable appearance in 2016.
Today, Lloyd is perhaps the most charismatic living figure in jazz. Among the many ensembles he has led in recent years, the quartet featuring Gerald Clayton, Harish Raghavan, and Kweku Sumbry stands out as his most classic and deeply evocative group.
Lloyd first rose to international prominence in the second half of the 1960s with Dream Weaver, the debut studio album by his groundbreaking quartet with Keith Jarrett, Jack DeJohnette, and Cecil McBee. Soon afterward, Forest Flowermade history, as Lloyd became one of the first jazz musicians ever to sell more than one million copies of an album.
Now 88 years old, with a career spanning more than six decades, this mystical and ever-evolving artist continues to seek out new musical horizons. A devoted mentor with a remarkable instinct for discovering and nurturing talent, Lloyd has always surrounded himself with exceptional younger musicians — something powerfully embodied by his current quartet. His performance promises to be one of the most moving and unforgettable moments of this year’s Bohemia JazzFest.
